Former UNC Star Michael Busch Shines at MLB All-Star Futures Game

Former UNC star Michael Busch became just the fourth Tar Heel to ever play in the MLB All-Star Futures Game on Sunday, and made the most of his time on the field.

Busch was selected in the first round (31st overall) of the 2019 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers and has been playing his way up through the minor league system at warp speed.

He entered Sunday’s Futures Game at Coors Field in Denver as a defensive replacement at second base in the fifth inning, fielding a ground ball that same inning.

At the plate in the sixth inning, Busch hit a single with an exit velocity of nearly 100 mph off his bat — showing his skills in that area of the game as well.

The National League Futures team would go on to win the game 8-3.

Busch joins Mike Bynum (2000), Chris Iannetta (2005) and Matt Harvey (2011) as the only other Tar Heels to play in the Futures Game, which began in 1999, according to Pat James of the Boshamer Bulletin.

He is currently the No. 69 overall prospect according to Baseball America and is hitting .223 with nine home runs and 20 RBIs through 51 games with the Double-A Tulsa Drillers this season.
