Add another award to the crowded trophy case of UNC star forward Erin Matson, who was selected Monday as the National Field Hockey Coaches Association South Region Player of the Year.
Matson recently scored the overtime game-winner in the Tar Heels’ NCAA championship game win over Michigan, giving head coach Karen Shelton’s program its third consecutive national title.
The junior from Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania led UNC in scoring this season with 29 goals and nine assists in just 20 games — earning the Honda Sport Award for field hockey and ACC Offensive Player of the Year status.
She was also named the NFHCA National Offensive Player of the Week three times during the 2020 season and this marks here second time earning the NFHCA South Region Player of the Year award.
During Matson’s three years in Chapel Hill, the Tar Heels have gone 65-1 and won the NCAA championship in each season.
Over that time, Matson has played in 63 of those 66 games and accounted for 82 goals and 43 assists — which has already put her among the greatest UNC athletes of all-time across all sports even with one year of eligibility still remaining.
