A hat trick from Ryleigh Heck and a pair of goals from Dani Mendez helped Carolina crush visiting Richmond 6-1 at Karen Shelton Stadium Friday evening. The Tar Heels have now won seven consecutive games.
Mendez scored both of her goals in a span of 58 seconds in the first quarter, her ninth and 10th goals of the season. Heck then added two more in the second quarter, with reigning National Player of the Week tacking on another. Carolina led 5-0 at halftime.
Heck completed her hat trick with 1:08 left in the third quarter. The senior now has 16 goals on the season and has scored four times in her last two games after a streak of six games without a goal.
Overall, UNC outshot the Spiders 23-8 and held a 13-4 edge in shots on goal. Seven of Richmond’s eight total shots came in the final quarter, as did the Spiders’ only goal.
Friday’s game was UNC’s last non-conference matchup of the regular season. Now 15-1 overall and 6-1 in ACC play, Carolina will wrap up the regular season when it hosts No. 8 Duke at Karen Shelton Stadium on Friday, October 31 at 6 p.m. The ACC Tournament starts the following week in Louisville.
