An eight-run second inning helped the UNC baseball team build a huge lead early in Tuesday’s game against UNCW at Boshamer Stadium, which helped the Tar Heels defeat the Seahawks by a score of 14-9.
A sacrifice fly by Justice Thompson gave UNC (25-22) a 1-0 advantage in the first inning, before a two-run blast from Danny Serretti kick-started the offensive explosion in the second.
UNCW (29-18) gave the Tar Heels a trio of runs when Caleb Roberts walked with the bases loaded, then Angel Zarate and Thompson each scored on wild pitches. Mac Horvath launched a three-run homer later in the inning before the Seahawks were finally able to stop the bleeding.
Although UNCW scored the next three runs, accuracy on the mound would come up once again in both the fifth and sixth innings. Both Serretti and Zarate came home to score on wild pitches, extending the Tar Heel lead to 11-3.
The seventh inning saw UNCW break through for three runs against three different UNC relievers, then add another in the top of the eighth to pull back within four runs.
UNC crushed any hopes of a comeback, however, by getting three runs courtesy of Thompson, Roberts and Horvath.
Horvath ended the game with a team-high four RBIs, while Thompson, Roberts and Serretti each added two apiece. The Tar Heels tallied 14 runs on just 11 hits, while being aided heavily by seven walks and a hit batter.
It was also UNC’s final regular season home game, with the team entering the ACC Tournament having posted a 19-10 record at home.
Up Next:
The Tar Heels end the regular season with their final ACC weekend series of 2021, which will take place in Atlanta against ACC Coastal Division leader Georgia Tech (25-20, 19-14 ACC). First pitch on Thursday is set for 7 p.m.
