Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Town of Chapel Hill, the Food Bank of Eastern and Central North Carolina and many other organizations have worked to provide consistent food distribution to community members. With the coronavirus leading to business restrictions to protect public health, many people are without jobs or in need of support.

Now, those local groups are in need of their own help getting food to community members.

The Town of Chapel Hill recently put out a call for volunteers to help with the weekly distribution of food. According to the town’s release, 530 boxes of food were distributed to 265 families at last week’s distribution.

“As the number of weeks in pandemic continue to grow,” wrote the town, “so does the need for more volunteers.”

The food bank distribution takes place every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Eubanks Road Park and Ride Lot near Carraway Village. Organizers are seeking volunteers who can donate up to four hours of their time during those days to do various tasks, like packing boxes, tallying vehicles and loading food into trunks. Most of the remaining August distributions are almost full of volunteers, but many slots are open for September and October distributions on the town’s signup page.
