The Town of Carrboro announced that the Estes Drive/ North Greensboro intersection and roundabout will be closed from April 14 to April 28.
The water and sewer installation plan has revealed the need to install a manhole in the center of North Greensboro Street. Due to the depth of the pipe, it will be necessary to close the intersection to all travel to and from Estes Drive except for the northwestern leg of the intersection (from the Williams Street and Sue Ann Court direction).
Detours will route traffic towards Hillsborough Road and West Main Street to and from the center of downtown.
Construction on the Estes Drive/ North Greensboro roundabout began in August 2019 and is expected to be completed by September 2021.
Construction on this roundabout was expected to be complicated by underground utilities, including a large stormwater channel under the intersection.
North Carolina’s Department of Transportation has been installing more roundabouts in the state because they reduce congestion on high-traffic roads.
Studies show roundabouts are safer compared to stop signs or traffic lights. NCDOT reports a 46 percent decrease in total crashes at intersections in the state where they have constructed roundabouts. The intersection at Estes Drive and North Greensboro Street has been prone to accidents over the last few years.
