Offense was scarce on Sunday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium for the three-game series rubber match between Dallas Baptist and No. 22 UNC, as the visitors held the Tar Heels scoreless in a 3-0 victory.
Dallas Baptist (6-1) held the Tar Heels (6-2) to just two hits in the game, just one day after being shutout 9-0 in the series opener in the first game of a doubleheader. The Patriots took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Sunday, taking an advantage of a UNC error before plating the second run with an RBI groundout.
Upon entering the game in the fourth inning, Tar Heel reliever Austin Love retired the first 10 batters he faced and finished the game for the Tar Heels with nine strikeouts.
Not until the ninth inning did Dallas Baptist add its final run of the afternoon, but with little to no production from its offense UNC was unable to mount a serious comeback–instead suffering its second straight loss after a 6-0 start to the season.
The Patriots ended the day with only five hits of their own, as they also took advantage of the Tar Heels’ season-high four errors.
“We saw as good of arms as you are going to see this weekend,” UNC head coach Mike Fox said afterwards. “Three-straight days and out of the bullpen, and we knew that. The reason we scheduled them is because Dallas Baptist is a regional caliber team and we felt like with our team we needed to put them in that situation. You do not see this kind of box score very often- one walk and 14 strikeouts for both teams. I’m proud of our guys for competing.”
