The ownership group of the Daniel Boone Village shopping mall will be talking about their plans for redevelopment at the next Hillsborough Board of Commissioners workshop meeting on Monday.

Hillsborough Mayor Jenn Weaver said there has been a high level of community interest in what will happen to the land ever since it was sold in 2018 to the same development group building the Collins Ridge housing community.

“I know we are all incredibly interested to hear what they might have in mind,” Weaver said in an interview with 97.9 The Hill’s Aaron Keck. “It’s important to remember this is very high-level stuff.”

This is the first time the board will hear from the new owners since the property changed hands, according to Weaver. She said developers usually only ask to meet before the board if there is a big announcement or serious plans that need fine-tuning.

“We ask developers to do this if they are thinking about asking for a rezoning, or something like that,” said Weaver, “to come before us and say, ‘Hey this is what we’re thinking about – is this something you’re remotely interested in before we go any farther down the road?’”

Weaver is especially interested in the new developers’ plans since, because the land is zoned commercially, the town board isn’t usually involved in the planning process.

“You know it zoned by rights – commercial – so there’s a good chance the town board would never see it because they would just redevelop it under whatever the current zoning was,” Weaver said. “The only way we would see it is if they wanted a rezoning and so that’s definitely got my interest peaked.”

The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on January 27.
