The Thanksgiving holiday weekend is here, which means closings for most municipal offices and other government services. Here’s a list of offices and services that will be closed or suspended in Chapel Hill, Carrboro and the rest of Orange County during the holiday.
Chapel Hill
- Most municipal offices will be closed Nov. 28-29.
- Chapel Hill Public Library will be closed.
- Chapel Hill Transit will not operate on Thursday, Nov. 28, and will operate on a Saturday schedule on Friday, Nov. 29 (no U or NU service).
- Residential trash collection will not be affected. Yard waste will not be collected (no make-up collection).
- Curbside recycling will not be collected Nov. 28 (make-up day Saturday, Nov. 30)
- Residential trash collection will not be affected. Yard waste will not be collected Nov. 28 and Nov. 29. No yard waste collection this week.
- Curbside recycling will not be collected Thursday, Nov. 28. Make-up day Saturday, Nov. 30.
- Commercial trash will not be collected Nov. 28-29. Thursday and Friday’s trash will be collected before the end of the week.
- The Orange County landfill will be closed Thursday and Friday. Waste and recycling centers will be closed Thursday and open 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday.
- The Chapel Hill Public Library will be closed Thursday and Friday.
- Chapel Hill Transit will not operate on Nov. 28. On Nov. 29, CHT will operate on a Saturday schedule, with no U or NU routes.
- Housing: Office and Maintenance Division will be closed. For emergency maintenance services, call 919-968-2855.
- Parks and Recreation: The Plant Road office will be closed. Call facilities for schedules: Chapel Hill Community Center (919-968-2790); Hargraves Recreation Center (919-968-2794); Homestead Aquatics Center (919-968-2799); The Corner Teen Center (919-968-2841).
Carrboro
- Residential Trash will be collected 2 days prior to your normal collection day.
- Holiday (no collection) Alternate Day
- Wednesday, November 27th = Monday, November 25th
- Thursday, November 28th = Tuesday, November 26th
- Friday, November 29th = Wednesday, November 27th
- Yard Waste & Loose Leaves will not be collected Thanksgiving week (November 25th – November 29th).
Hillsborough
- Town of Hillsborough offices will be closed Thursday and Friday, Nov. 28-29 to observe Thanksgiving.
- Garbage collection — Citizens whose garbage is normally picked up on Thursdays will receive service on Wednesday, Nov. 27. Friday routes will be served Monday, Dec. 2.
- Brush collection — Brush collection will follow the same schedule as garbage collection.
- Recycling — Orange County waste and recycling centers will be closed Thursday, Nov. 28. Convenience centers will be open Friday, Nov. 29. Contact the Orange County Solid Waste Management Department for more information.
- Landfill — The Orange County landfill and all associated facilities will be closed Thursday and Friday, Nov. 28-29. Contact the Orange County Solid Waste Management Department for more information.
- Rollout carts — Rollout recycling and garbage carts may be placed by the street as early as 4 p.m. the day before collection. They should be removed from streetside by 6 a.m. the day after collection.
