A suspect who led law enforcement on a high-speed chase and allegedly fired shots at authorities in Orange County on Tuesday morning is in custody.

Orange County Sheriff’s Office officials said 20-year-old Tyler Lloyd Grantz, of Kernersville, was taken into custody and charged with attempted murder, assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm and discharging a weapon into a moving vehicle. More charges are expected, officials said Tuesday.

Grantz is accused of leading authorities on a chase after a North Carolina State Trooper attempted to pull a 2008 GMC SUV over for traveling at 98 miles per hour on I-40 around 2 a.m.

He then crashed the vehicle down an embankment near I-40 and New Hope Church Road before fleeing on foot.

Grantz is accused of firing multiple shots at the state trooper during the pursuit. The patrolman was not hurt.

Several schools across the affected area were forced to go into a soft lockdown while Grantz was at-large. He was eventually taken into custody after hiding for several hours.

The vehicle involved in the chase was reported stolen in Greensboro in late February.

Grantz is being held under a $1 million bond.
