A crash along a rural road in western Orange County killed two people, who were reportedly high schoolers, late Thursday night.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol shared a release saying it responded to reports of a crash on Oak Grove Church Road near Chipmunk Lane at 9:25 p.m. — an area south of the Buckhorn community and north of Cane Creek Reservoir. Upon arrival, investigators found two occupants in a crashed Subaru that caught fire after striking a tree on the north side of the road. Neither people survived, according to Friday’s release.

The State Highway Patrol said investigators believe the vehicle was traveling south on Oak Grove Church Road when it traveled off the road to the right, re-entered the road, and traveled off the road to the left after crossing the center line. Friday’s alert said, at this time, it is unclear what caused the driver of the Subaru to lose control and the crash is still under investigation.

The Alamance-Burlington Schools System shared a statement with Chapelboro confirming the two deceased were students in its district. The statement read:

“It is with heavy hearts that we inform you of the tragic death of two of our students from Southeast Alamance High School who were involved in a car accident last night in Orange County.

“We send our love and support to their families, friends, and our staff as they process this heartbreaking news. Extra support staff are on hand in our schools to assist students and staff today and next week as needed.

“Our entire school community mourns this devastating loss.”

The State Highway Patrol release said Oak Grove Church Road was closed near Chipmunk Lane for nearly 3 hours during the crash investigation, with troopers clearing the scene at 12:12 a.m. on Friday. No other information is being publicly shared at this time, according to the agency.
