With a chance to claim the 21st ACC Tournament championship in program history on Sunday at Karen Shelton Stadium in Chapel Hill, the top-ranked UNC field hockey team did not disappoint.
The Tar Heels rolled to a 7-2 blowout over the visiting Wake Forest Demon Deacons to win the title–earning an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament–while also improving their record to 19-0 so far in 2018.
Freshman Erin Matson put UNC ahead with a goal off of a penalty corner just 62 seconds into the action, as the Tar Heels would go on to build a 4-2 lead by halftime.
Eva Van’t Hoog, Megan DuVernois and Catherine Hayden were responsible for the other three UNC goals in the first half.
Following the locker room break, the Tar Heels would continue to pile on with goals from Matson, Cassie Sumfest and DuVernois–leaving no doubt as to who is the top team in the nation.
UNC dominated in total shots, recording 21 compared to only eight for Wake Forest.
“I’m proud of our offensive output in this game,” head coach Karen Shelton said afterwards. “We got big goals all the way around. Really fun for our team to score seven in a championship game like this.”
