Thanks to efforts by the Carrboro Fire-Rescue Department, one of the fire hydrants in Carrboro Town Commons has been painted pink as part of efforts to raise awareness for breast cancer.
With the month of October widely recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, fire stations around the state are using the hashtag #pinkhydrantchallenge to challenge each other to paint a hydrant pink. According to WFMY News in Greensboro, the Carrboro Fire-Rescue Department challenged the Burlington Fire Department as well.
The challenge also encourages residents to take a picture with the pink hydrant and use the hashtag to honor a loved one who has has battled — or is battling — breast cancer. Residents can sign their name on the hydrant, as well.
