On the James Taylor Bridge in southern Chapel Hill Saturday, an incident nearly turned deadly.
“The suspect believes that he may have been cut off,” Chapel Hill Police spokesman Ran Northam told WCHL. “The suspect then showed a weapon and fired multiple shots at the victim’s vehicle.
“We believe that this was taking place while the vehicle was moving.”
Northam said the victim was able to get a partial read of the license plate of the 2018 Toyota Camry the suspect was driving as they fled toward Carrboro.
The plate information, Northam said, led Chapel Hill and Carrboro Police to take 30-year-old Christopher Leander Stroud, of Jones Ferry Road, into custody. Stroud and his vehicle were identified before the arrest, according to Northam.
Five individuals, including multiple children, were in the victim’s vehicle. There were no injuries reported from the shooting.
Stroud was arrested and charged with five counts of felony assault with a weapon with intent to kill, one felony count of discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle and misdemeanor counts of assault with a deadly weapon with a minor present, three counts of assault on a minor under 12, reckless driving and going armed to the terror of the public.
Stroud appeared before a magistrate and was given a secured bond of $312,500. He was scheduled to make his first appearance in Orange County court on Monday afternoon.
