As the annual Late Night With Roy event is set to kick off the men’s basketball season for UNC on Friday at the Smith Center, the school’s athletic department announced the stadium will be implementing a clear bag policy this upcoming year.
The decision falls in line with the one made prior to football season at Kenan Stadium.
It has a goal of reducing wait times for fans to get into the building, while also putting UNC in line with many other collegiate and professional sporting venues in terms of safety and security.
Although fans are encouraged to leave all bags at home, certain items will be allowed onto the premises.
Clear plastic or vinyl bags no larger than 12″ x 6″ x 12″ and small clutch purses no larger than 4.5″ x 6.5″ are among the items that can be brought into the arena. Fans are allowed to bring one clear bag and one small clutch purse per person.
Necessary medical equipment–as well as phones, binoculars and cameras–are all still allowed inside.
Prohibited items include: purses larger than a clutch bag, coolers, briefcases, backpacks, diaper bags, fanny packs, luggage of any kind, computer bags and camera bags.
This policy goes into effect on Friday, and will remain in place throughout the 2017-18 UNC men’s basketball season and beyond.
