UNC Health Care announced the new location for UNC’s Surgical Tower project on Tuesday. After considering several locations, the new tower will be placed directly in front of the North Carolina Memorial Hospital.
The tower’s location seeks to reduce the overall cost of the project by using the existing loading dock and nearby ambulance bays during construction. The completed tower will provide patients with easy access to the hospital’s surgical services while adding a more modern design to the building.
Dr. Brian Goldstein is the Chief Operating Officer at UNC Hospitals. He said many locations were considered, but they found Memorial Hospital to be best suited for easy access.
“We look forward to finalizing the designs this year and beginning construction of this important project in 2017,” Goldstein said.
The Surgical Tower will replace buildings built in the 1950s that have smaller rooms. The new tower will offer patients larger and more modern operating suites that will enable physicians to treat patients more efficiently.
UNC Hospitals will borrow up to $250 million to fund the project by selling bonds later this year.
