The third-ranked UNC men’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the young season on Friday night in Wilmington at the hands of UNCW.

A single goal from Hjalmar Ekdal proved to be enough for the Seahawks to pull off the 1-0 upset over the favored Tar Heels.

Ekdal used his head to send home a corner kick from teammate David Lozano in the 27th minute, while the UNCW defense received a pair of outstanding second-half saves from goalie Ryan Cretins that helped keep UNC off the scoreboard.

The Tar Heels (2-1) held a 12-6 advantage in shots over the Seahawks (3-0), but simply couldn’t find a way to break through.

Luckily, they won’t have to wait long for a chance to get back on the winning track.

UNC will travel to Greensboro on Sunday for a match against UNCG, which is set to begin at 7 p.m.
