Will this Super Bowl give us another game for the ages?
My personal dilemma is that I like both teams in Super Bowl LIV, which rarely happens. Of course, that’s because my team – which is the team you love to hate – has been in nine of the last 19. Do I have to tell you who that is?
But how can you not like these two teams: the Kansas City Chiefs with the best quarterback in football and a coach who deserves to win one, and the San Francisco 49ers and their millions of fans left from the Joe Montana era.
The Chiefs have Patrick Mahomes, the brightest young star in the game. The 24-year-old kid has it all, speed, savvy moves and a rocket arm that throws the ball from various angles. They also have the fastest player in the NFL, Tyreek Hill, the best tight end, Travis Kelce, and a defense that is good enough this year.
Lovable, mustachioed Andy Reid made one Super Bowl as the Eagles head coach, losing to the Patriots. The Chiefs should have been in last year’s game but lost the AFC championship at home in overtime to you know who.
Despite the KC glitz, the Niners seem a little sexier. They have perhaps the best interior lines in football, interchangeable parts of guys most of us have never heard of, and an all-around star in TE George Kittle, who can play all over the field.
San Fran also has stud quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who was supposed to be Tom Brady’s successor until he was traded three years ago. The 49ers are so balanced that Jimmy G is more a game manager than a singular star, but he can make big plays.
This is the first outdoor Super Bowl in five years, since the Panthers lost to the Broncos on the 49ers home field, and let’s pray that rain doesn’t become a factor in Miami. We want a dry field on a balmy night, a pick’em game that lives up to the hype.
I checked to see who won the Madden Football match-up.
The Chiefs busted out to an early lead, but once the 49ers dug in on both sides of the ball, their defense led by rookie LB Nick Bosa contained Mahomes and scored enough to pull away.
Although computer-simulated, I agree with the outcome.

Chansky's Notebook: Leaky Steps UpDean Smith used to say he’ll be happy with a one-point win. The legendary UNC basketball coach struggled spiritually between playing well according to his teachings, regardless of outcome, and winning no matter how poorly you play. Since his job was to win and he was so competitive, he chose the latter. If he was […]

Chansky's Notebook: Goals and AmbitionsGarrison Brooks has both opportunity and pressure. On paper, the ACC looks as weak as it has been in some time due to widespread losses to graduation and early departures to the NBA, and no sure-shot superstars in the incoming recruiting classes. A beneficiary of this development is Brooks, the Carolina senior who was second-team All-ACC last year and earned the league’s […]

Chansky's Notebook: Kudos To CarolinaUNC teams did a commendable job beating the odds. Who among us thought the ACC would be playing football and other fall sports last summer? Chansky's Notebook: Extra MotivationCarolina’s schedule could be working to its advantage. When the COVID-revised list of games came out, it looked troublesome for the Tar Heels with Virginia Tech and Florida State basically bookending Notre Dame and Miami with four rivalry games in a row right in the middle. Coaches usually don’t like that because it takes a […]
