Local singer/songwriter Emma Geiger stopped by Live and Local this week, following the release of her new EP “Reverse Bloom.”

Geiger recorded “Reverse Bloom” at Betty’s, the Chapel Hill studio owned by Sylvan Esso – a band she says she’s loved since her college days. The EP came out in April, but Geiger actually wrote and recorded the songs back in 2022.

“They feel a bit like a time capsule of that moment,” she says. “But I’m glad to have a record of that time – any record of anything, I think, is useful to reflect upon. And it’s also nice to notice the way that songs’ meanings can change and take on a new significance.”

The title track, for instance: Geiger says she originally wrote “Reverse Bloom” about a friendship that was ending, but today she says the song hits her more positively. “It just has a lot of hope in it,” she says. “Things can be lost, but you can find ways to find hope and brightness again…I see it as cosmic, too: the bloom of life, of existence, and how time is non-linear, so things can ‘bloom’ in either direction.”

Geiger is playing at the Cave on West Franklin Street this Wednesday, May 15, at 9 p.m. along with Riggings and Minor Moon. After that, she’ll be in Winston-Salem on May 22, playing at Fair Witness.

Emma Geiger stopped by Live & Local to chat about the album and perform three songs live: “All Your Words,” “Reverse Bloom,” and “Invite You.” Listen:
