This week’s Hometown Hero, presented by Hendrick Southpoint, is Anne Brashear, who is leading a grassroots effort to clean up the area around the American Legion Post 6 in Chapel Hill and make it a sustainable community park.

“Anne has organized volunteers daily to go out there and pick out some of the plants that have just taken over that area,” said Jennifer Daniels, who sent in the Hometown Hero nomination.

Anne and her husband, Bill, have been working on that project for many months. They’ve stepped up their efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic, and they’ve recruited a number of volunteers to help out in the cause.

“She and her husband are out there every single day working, you know, maybe she has three to five volunteers a day and I volunteer on Sunday,” said Daniels.

Daniels said Brashear has made a big difference for anyone who uses that area for walking, hiking, or biking. Additionally, she said it’s made an impact on local native plants.

“She’s very enthusiastic and she’s had to learn how to organize a group to do this. It’s a very dramatic when you go back there and see the kind of work that they’re doing.”
