An Orange County man is a million dollars richer after winning a lottery prize.
Rodney Emory of Hillsborough won the top prize for the $150 Million Cash Explosion after purchasing the lucky ticket for $20 at the Quality Mart on U.S. 70.
Emory claimed his prize on Monday at the lottery headquarters in Raleigh, choosing to take home a lump sum of $1,698,006 after taxes.
Last year, a Chapel Hill woman won a $1 million scratch-off prize at the Eagles on U.S. 15-510 North.
“I saw the symbol and was like, ‘No. This doesn’t happen.’” Sue Manchester said. “I showed the same coworker and he said, ‘Sue you just won $1 million’. I still didn’t believe it. It’s very serendipitous. Especially since I rarely get scratch-off tickets.”
Manchester took home the lump sum as well and pocketed $423,010 after taxes.
Ticket sales from scratch-off games like $150 Million Cash Explosion make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $650 million a year for North Carolina education.
