Sue Manchester was on her lunch break when a co-worker texted her, asking if she could pick them up a Red Bull. That text led directly to Manchester winning a $1 million lottery prize.

When the normal place she would stop was “too busy,” Manchester pulled in to the Eagles on U.S. 15-510 North in Chapel Hill. It was there she bought a “Colossal Cash” scratch-off ticket.

“I grabbed the Red Bull and then noticed I had a $20 and a $10 bill,” Manchester said. “I decided to get one of the tickets since my coworker has been winning on it recently.”

She took the ticket back to her office, scratched it, and found herself a winner.

“I saw the symbol and was like, ‘No. This doesn’t happen.’” Manchester said. “I showed the same coworker and he said, ‘Sue you just won $1 million’. I still didn’t believe it. It’s very serendipitous. Especially since I rarely get scratch-off tickets.”

Manchester claimed her prize Wednesday at North Carolina Education Lottery headquarters in Raleigh. When choosing between 20 payments of $50,000 a year or a lump sum of $600,000, she chose the lump sum. After required state and federal taxes were calculated and subtracted, she took home $423,010.

Ticket sales from games like Colossal Cash help the lottery raise more than $650 million a year for education.
