While the summer months are usually spent relaxing with family and sitting by the pool, many kids in the local area will be without meals typically provided by schools. That’s where Food for the Summer steps in, proving nutritious meals throughout the summer for school children in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools District.

Carolyn Brandt, the director of Food for the Summer, says that the program is feeding around 3,000 kids per day since the start of the summer. With 350 kids at each meal site per day and 30 volunteers overall, Food for the Summer has been busy making sure each child receives a healthy meal.

Aside from serving meals, Brandt said that the volunteers spend time engaging with the children in fun activities. Additionally, firefighters from the local area made an appearance to teach kids about fire trucks and the jobs they take on.
