Fiona Crawley and Carson Tanguilig are national champions twice over.

The UNC pair won the NCAA women’s doubles national title on Saturday in Orlando, defeating teammates Reese Brantmeier and Elizabeth Scotty in the championship match. It’s the second time in three seasons a Tar Heel pair has won the women’s doubles crown.

Tanguilig and Crawley won the first set in dominant fashion, 6-1, but dropped the second 2-6 and headed to a first-to-1o tiebreaker in the third set. In the win-by-two format, the two Tar Heel pairs were locked in a 9-9 deadlock, but Tanguilig and Crawley won the final two points to clinch the win.

It’s the first individual NCAA title for either Crawley or Tanguilig. For Crawley, it’s an appropriate end to a dominant 2022-23 season, one which saw her win the ITA individual and team titles and the NCAA team title in addition to this latest win. Tanguilig also has an additional feather in her cap after winning the clinching match in last week’s national championship.

This was Scotty’s second appearance in the NCAA doubles championship, after she won with teammate Makenna Jones in 2021. Brantmeier is a true freshman, but already has an NCAA team title and runner-up doubles finish to her name.

Crawley and Tanguilig’s win marks the fourth individual NCAA title for UNC during the 2022-23 academic year, after wrestler Austin O’Connor won a crown and diver Aranza Vazquez won twice at the NCAA diving championships.
