The bad news: a pair of Tar Heels are guaranteed to lose the NCAA women’s doubles championship.

The good news: a pair of Tar Heels are also guaranteed to win the NCAA women’s doubles championship.

Two UNC doubles teams will face off in the championship match of the women’s draw Saturday in Orlando. The team of Fiona Crawley and Carson Tanguilig will face the team of Reese Brantmeier and Elizabeth Scotty.

The all-Carolina final guarantees a Tar Heel pair will win the women’s doubles title for the second time in three seasons. Ironically, Scotty was part of that first win, teaming up with Makenna Jones to take the crown in 2021. The foursome competing Saturday in Orlando are all already national champions, having won the team title last weekend. Now, one pair will be able to claim the rare honor of having won two NCAA championships in the span of a week.

Brantmeier and Scotty are one of eight seeded pairs in the 32-team women’s doubles draw. Their path to the championship has taken them through opponents from California, Arizona State, Michigan (the Wolverine pair was the No. 2 seed) and USC.

Crawley and Tanguilig were not seeded, and they defeated opponents from Georgia, Pepperdine (the draw’s No. 1 seed), Florida and Virginia.
