UNC wrestling has become the latest Tar Heel team to have its schedule affected due to COVID protocols this season. The team announced Wednesday it would not be competing in this weekend’s Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, TN, due to COVID protocols within the program.
The wrestling team joins both the men’s and women’s basketball programs among the UNC winter sports programs who have been shuffling their schedules due to COVID protocols.
The Tar Heels have not hit the mats since a December 17 victory over Appalachian State. Now, head coach Coleman Scott’s group will have to wait until January 21 for its next chance to compete, when Duke visits Carmichael Arena for UNC’s ACC opener.
Per updated ACC COVID regulations, the cancelled trip to Chattanooga will not count against Carolina’s record. The Tar Heels are 4-4 this season, with each of their losses coming against ranked opponents. They will have three more opportunities to pick up a ranked win, with matches against No. 21 Pittsburgh, No. 10 Virginia Tech and No. 5 NC State closing out a challenging regular season slate. The Tar Heels are ranked No. 20 in the NCAA’s latest poll.
