UNC wrestling head coach Coleman Scott has stepped down from his position, effective immediately. Scott will reportedly return to his alma mater Oklahoma State to serve as associate head coach.

In Scott’s stead, UNC has reportedly promoted associate head coach Tony Ramos to head coach in an interim role. Ramos first joined the wrestling program in 2016 after a decorated career with Iowa, where he won a national championship in 2014. Since then, Ramos has climbed the ladder from volunteer assistant to Scott’s second-in-command.

Scott, himself a former NCAA champion, led the UNC wrestling program to new heights as head coach. His tenure, which began in 2015, saw star Austin O’Connor win national championships in two different weight classes, becoming the first Tar Heel to win multiple national titles since T.J. Jaworsky did so in the 1990s. Carolina finished with a winning record in dual matches in six of Scott’s eight seasons as head coach, with the most successful season coming in 2019-20. UNC held a 14-3 record before the season was halted due to the pandemic.
