A 90th-minute equalizer from visiting Florida State robbed the No. 1 UNC women’s soccer team of a thrilling victory, but the Tar Heels stayed undefeated after a back-and-forth 3-3 draw with the No. 3 Seminoles in Chapel Hill on Sunday.

The Florida State goal came off a corner kick with just one second to play and was effectively the last kick of the match. It followed up a go-ahead goal by Carolina’s Kate Faasse roughly five minute earlier which had given the Tar Heels their first lead of the day.

Florida State nosed in front twice, once after 16:50 on the first goal of the afternoon and then again in the 63rd minute. Ally Sentnor equalized for UNC in the 42nd minute after the first Seminole goal, and Maddie Dahlien did the honors in the 77th to level the score at 2-2. That set the stage for Faasse’s late heroics and FSU’s last-ditch equalizer.

The two teams combined for 39 shots, 13 shots on goal, 13 corner kicks (10 by Carolina) and seven saves. Sentnor herself accounted for seven of UNC’s 20 shots. The three goals are the most allowed by UNC since the 2022 national championship against UCLA, which coincidentally was knotted up on a last-second corner kick by the Bruins to deny the Tar Heels a title.

Carolina is now 7-0-4 on the season and has earned results against all seven ranked opponents it’s faced. Next up for the Tar Heels is a rivalry clash with NC State in Raleigh next Saturday at 7 p.m. The Wolfpack defeated UNC in its last visit.
