The UNC women’s soccer team revealed its 2023 regular season schedule on Friday. The Tar Heels will look to reach the College Cup for the second straight season after a national runner-up finish in 2022.
Carolina opens with a home exhibition against East Carolina on August 12 at 6 p.m. before beginning the regular season on the road at Penn State on August 17. The Nittany Lions won the 2022 Big Ten championship and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
Following the visit to Happy Valley, UNC will return home for a five-match homestand against Cal, Wisconsin, USC, Gardner-Webb and Arkansas. The Golden Bears, Trojans and Razorbacks all competed in last year’s NCAA Tournament.
The homestand is followed up by consecutive road matches at South Carolina (who eliminated UNC from the 2021 NCAA Tournament) and Alabama. The Crimson Tide reached the national semifinals in 2022.
The ACC season begins on September 15 at 3:30 p.m. in Chapel Hill against Virginia Tech, who defeated the Tar Heels in Blacksburg last season. Home highlights of the conference season include NCAA Tournament rematches with Florida State on September 24 at 1 p.m. and Notre Dame on October 19 at 8 p.m. Carolina defeated both the Seminoles and the Fighting Irish on its way to the championship match. UNC will celebrate Senior Day against Syracuse on October 22 at 1 p.m.
The Tar Heels will play all three of their in-state conference foes on the road, visiting NC State on September 30, Duke on October 8 and Wake Forest on October 13. Carolina will also make a difficult road trip to Virginia on September 21 and will conclude the regular season on the road at Boston College on October 26. All in all, the Tar Heels will play eight of the Sweet 16 from last season’s NCAA Tournament.
