The UNC women’s lacrosse team took the first step in its journey toward a repeat national championship Friday afternoon in Chapel Hill, easing past Sacred Heart 16-5 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Tar Heels, the No. 4 overall seed, will now face the winner of Richmond and Marquette in the second round on Sunday.

Carolina exploded out of the gates with four unanswered goals in the first quarter, then used six consecutive scored in the second half to put the game on ice. After the opening salvo, the Pioneers never got within closer than three goals.

Second team All-ACC honoree Reilly Casey led the way offensively with five goals and two assists for a game-high seven points. All-ACC freshman honoree Marissa White also registered a hat trick, while Caitlyn Wurzburger added in three assists to go along with a pair of goals. Nine different Tar Heels found the back of the net.

It was a dominant effort in possession by Carolina, who outshot the Pioneers 32-13 and held a 16-9 advantage in draw controls. Carolina goalie Alecia Nicholas only had to make four saves on the day, which ties her season low.

Richmond and Marquette will play later on Friday on Dorrance Field for the right to face the Tar Heels.
