The UNC women’s lacrosse team’s 29-game winning streak came to an end Sunday, as the Tar Heels fell 13-9 at No. 3 Northwestern. It’s the team’s first loss since the 2021 national championship.

UNC fell into an early 6-1 hole and never led. The closest the Tar Heels came after the Wildcats’ opening surge was 10-8 early in the fourth quarter on a goal from Reilly Casey, but Northwestern rattled off three consecutive goals in response.

Caroline Godine recorded a hat trick for the Tar Heels, but no other teammate scored more than once. The nine goals scored were by far Carolina’s fewest on the season. The low output stood in especially stark contrast to UNC’s 20-goal performance in the previous game at Louisville.

In addition to the team’s 29-game winning streak being snapped, here are some other notable runs which came to an end Sunday:

  • 47 consecutive regular-season wins (the second-longest such streak in Division 1 women’s lacrosse history)
  • 20 consecutive wins against ranked teams
  • 12 consecutive wins against Top 10 opponents
  • 6 consecutive wins against Top 5 opponents

Carolina will look to bounce back from the rare setback on Thursday when it hosts High Point at Dorrance Field. The game is scheduled for 4 p.m.
