Budget season is still ongoing, but many local boards are taking a break from budget talks this week. The Chapel Hill Town Council has the busiest agenda, led by a pair of concept plans including one that’s drawn fire for potentially displacing some existing businesses downtown.

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Orange County

Orange County Commissioners meet at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21. Commissioners will get recommendations on employee benefits including health insurance, and they’ll vote to approve a contract to conduct a capital needs assessment for public schools. Click here for the full agenda.

The Carrboro Town Council also meets at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21, with a light agenda that includes a discussion of legislative priorities for 2023-24. Get a link to the agenda here.

The Chapel Hill Town Council meets at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 22. Council members will hear two concept plans: one for an apartment building on South Elliott Road, and another for a “Chapel Hill Life Sciences Center” on West Franklin Street. (That proposal’s drawn some pushback because it could displace popular existing businesses, including the Purple Bowl.) In addition, the council will consider allowing a drive-thru at Dunkin Donuts on E. Franklin Street, examine a zoning application for townhomes on Homestead Road, and vote on a contract to redevelop the Trinity Court public housing community. Click here for the full agenda.

And the Orange County School Board is holding a work session at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 20. Click here for this week’s agenda, which includes a discussion of the superintendent’s budget proposal for the 2023-24 year.

Chatham and Durham Counties

Chatham County Commissioners meet at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 20. Commissioners will review their recent board retreat, hear a presentation from the visitors bureau, and vote to authorize the county manager to move forward on Chatham County’s portion of the national opioid settlement. Click here for a link to the agenda.

The Durham City Council meets twice this week. Their first meeting is at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 20, with an agenda that includes a public hearing on next year’s budget and the five-year capital improvement plan. Then on Thursday, March 23, the council will hold a work session at 1 p.m. Click here for links to the agendas for both meetings.

And the Durham County school board meets at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 23, with an agenda that includes the superintendent’s proposed budget for next year. Get the full agenda at this link.
