It was a fun day at the office for the No. 2 UNC women’s lacrosse team Friday afternoon. The Tar Heels hosted Mercer at Dorrance Field and put the game to bed after just a quarter, leading 8-1 through 15 minutes and cruising to a 20-7 win.

It was the usual suspects in Carolina’s game-opening salvo: Sam Geiersbach, Ally Mastroianni, Andie Aldave (twice), Jamie Ortega, Caitlyn Wurzburger and Scottie Rose Growney each contributed goals in the first quarter. Each would also find the back of the net again before the day was done. Two more goals from Ortega in the second quarter helped send Carolina into the half up 13-4, and the game was academic from there.

Geiersbach led the team in points with eight, which included a season-high six assists. Ortega scored a team-high four goals, and was one of four Tar Heels to contribute hat tricks on the day. The winning performance extended Ortega’s streak of consecutive games with a goal scored to 41. It was also her 40th career game with at least four goals.

Goalie Taylor Moreno also kept a personal streak alive, starting in net for the 61st consecutive game, which is already a school record. Moreno is 55-6 in those 61 starts. She made three saves against Mercer before being pulled after the third quarter.

The Tar Heels are now 7-0 on the season and have won 34 of their last 35 games. The 20-goal performance was also the team’s 43rd time in its last 44 games in which it has scored in double digits. Seven of Carolina’s next eight games to end the regular season will be in ACC play, starting with a visit from Louisville Sunday at 1 p.m.
