Both UNC lacrosse teams were in action Friday, and both came away with wins, with the men’s team also winning Sunday. Early Friday afternoon, the No. 1 UNC women overcame an early 3-1 deficit at No. 13 Syracuse and beat the Orange 13-9. It’s Carolina’s 24th consecutive win.

UNC faced that 3-1 deficit at the end of the first quarter after the Orange had rattled off three consecutive goals. Kate Levy, daughter of Carolina head coach Jenny Levy, scored the only goal of the quarter for the Tar Heels.

The teams traded goals in the second quarter, but it was Syracuse who took a 6-5 lead into halftime thanks to a goal in the final minute. It was the first time UNC had trailed at the half in its last 12 games.

Goals from Chloe Humphrey, Carolina Godine and Darcy Felter in the third gave the Tar Heels an 8-7 lead entering the final quarter, but Syracuse evened the score at 8-8 just 40 seconds in. Carolina finally found some breathing room after Levy, Humphrey and Felter all found the back of the net again to give UNC its largest lead at 11-8. Syracuse would score one more time to cut the margin to two goals, but Levy and Kiley Mottice each scored in the final minutes to finish off the win.

Humphrey and Levy each finished with hat tricks. For Levy, it was the first of her collegiate career. Carolina outshot the Orange 41-20 overall and 21-10 in shots on goal, with UNC dominating after managing just a pair of shots on goal in the first quarter.

The Tar Heels are now 2-0 overall this season and 1-0 in ACC play. They will be back in action when they host Ohio State next Friday at Dorrance Field.

Later that day, the men took the field in Chapel Hill against visiting High Point and left no doubt, rolling past the Panthers 20-9.

Dominic Pietramala, after being held scoreless in UNC’s first game of the season, came back with a career-high seven-goal performance Friday, with five of those coming in the first half. Pietramala’s brilliance staked Carolina to a 12-2 lead at halftime.

Mason Szewczyk, who scored the game-winner in the season opener, finished with a hat trick Friday. He was one of 11 Tar Heels to find the back of the net against the Panthers. Owen Duffy was among that group, as the junior star finally tallied his first goal of the season early in the fourth quarter. As a team, UNC outshot High Point 56-24.

Carolina would keep the momentum rolling when it hosted Iona at Dorrance Field Saturday. Duffy made his presence felt by logging eight total points (three goals, five assists) to lead the way in the 23-7 UNC win.

The Tar Heels trailed 2-0 after just 2:41, but responded to the early Iona punch with four consecutive goals to end the first quarter and two more to open the second. After Iona scored again to make the score 6-3, the Tar Heels rattled off six more unanswered goals, taking a 12-3 lead with 3:20 to go before halftime. UNC led by as much as 21-4 late in the third quarter before finally taking its foot off the gas.

Carolina registered an eye-popping 65 total shots, including 22 alone in the third quarter. UNC spread the scoring around, with 17 players accounting for the team’s 23 goals. Duffy was one of five Tar Heels to find the back of the net multiple times.

Carolina is now 3-0 on the young season and will be back in action when it hosts No. 15 Johns Hopkins at Dorrance Field Friday at 5 p.m.
