Mason Szewczyk scored with 2:26 left to break a 10-10 tie at Dorrance Field and help UNC beat Jacksonville 11-10 in the 2026 season opener Saturday afternoon.

Szewczyk’s goal, his second of the game, came after the Dolphins had scored four consecutive goals – including two in the span of just seven seconds – to erase a 10-6 Tar Heel lead early in the fourth quarter. Szewczyk scored the tiebreaker just 1:05 after Jacksonville’s Jack Taylor had evened the score.

The Dolphins scored first to take a 1-0 lead, but UNC held a 4-3 advantage after the first quarter and remained in control for much of the middle portion of the game. Brevin Wilson netted his third goal of the game with 12:11 remaining to give Carolina its 10-6 edge, matching the Tar Heels’ largest lead of the day. Wilson’s hat trick came as UNC’s two top scorers from 2025, Owen Duffy and Dominic Pietramala, were both held scoreless. Ty English also scored twice for the Tar Heels.

Saturday’s game was not originally UNC’s season opener, but the Tar Heels’ visit to Towson last weekend was cancelled due to inclement weather. No makeup date has been scheduled. Up next for 1-0 Carolina is another home date, as the Tar Heels will host High Point at Dorrance Field Friday at 5 p.m.
