Both Tar Heels remaining in the NCAA Women’s Singles Tournament–seniors Sara Daavettila and Alexa Graham–won their matches on Monday in Orlando to advance to the Round of 16.
Top-seeded Daavettila defeated No. 55 Lea Ma of Georgia by a score of 6-4, 6-4. Graham came from behind in her match to upset No. 9 Natasha Subash of Virginia in three sets–winning 6-7, 6-0, 6-1.
Daavettila becomes the first Tar Heel in program history to reach the NCAA Round of 16 three times, while Graham earned her sixth All-American honor of her illustrious career at UNC–just the third Tar Heel to ever accomplish that feat.
Next up for Daavettila is a match against No. 21 Jessica Failla of Pepperdine on Tuesday. Graham has another tough challenge, as she faces off against No. 2 Estela Perez-Somarriba of Miami–the 2019 NCAA Singles champion.
