The top-ranked UNC women’s lacrosse team received four goals and an assist from attacker Jamie Ortega on Friday night at Dorrance Field, as the Tar Heels pulled away for a 13-6 rivalry win over No. 11 Duke.

Ortega’s effort moved her into second place on UNC’s all-time goals list, just three shy of the current record of 198 held by Abbey Friend.

The Tar Heels’ all-time leading scorer, Katie Hoeg, added two goals and five assists against Duke (3-1, 0-1 ACC) on Friday, while Ally Mastroianni chipped in three goals of her own.

UNC led the Blue Devils 4-3 midway through the first half, before breaking away to score the next nine goals. Duke scored three times in the final five minutes with the outcome no longer in question.

It was the Tar Heels’ 11th consecutive victory in the rivalry, a streak that dates back to 2015, and the team’s first ACC win of the season.

“The conditions tonight weren’t ideal because it was so wet,” UNC head coach Jenny Levy said afterwards. “But I thought our defense played great once again. The Duke game tonight was fun. It was a fun game, and it was hard. It was a great opponent we looked forward to playing, and we look forward to playing on Sunday against Vanderbilt.”
