It took overtime on Thursday night in Atlanta, but the UNC women’s basketball team managed to prevail over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets by a score of 67-60 in its first game since putting a scare into No. 5 Louisville.

Senior guard Medinah Muhammad scored seven of her 17 points in overtime to lead the Tar Heels (14-5, 5-3 ACC) to the win, while junior forward Janelle Bailey finished the night with a team-high 20 points. In addition, UNC also received 12 points from Shayla Bennett and 10 from Malu Tshitenge.

Together, those four players represented 59 of the Tar Heels’ 67 points.

This also marked the sixth game in a row where UNC has trailed at halftime, and third in which it has won. The Tar Heels have still yet to lose back-to-back games in their first season under new head coach Courtney Banghart.

Georgia Tech, meanwhile, fell to 14-5 overall and into a tie with UNC at 5-3 in ACC play.

“Georgia Tech is such a good team,” Banghart said afterwards. “We knew that and at their place, we knew it was going to be a battle. They’re the best defensive team, we’re the best offensive team, and we wanted to show out our defensive effort. I thought we were good defensively.

“All of these games are so important. This is a team that’s in the top five in the ACC with us, so it’s a huge head-to-head battle and we only play them once, so it’s a really big win.”

Another crucial ACC game awaits the Tar Heels on Sunday, when travel across the Triangle to take on No. 8 NC State. UNC defeated the Wolfpack in Chapel Hill earlier this month by a score of 66-60.
