In a game scheduled just days in advance, the UNC women’s basketball team went on the road and suffered a close 67-63 loss to the Miami Hurricanes.

The Tar Heels were originally supposed to play No. 2 Louisville on Sunday, while Miami was set to take on Duke–before COVID-19 protocols at those opposing schools forced postponements.

Freshman Alyssa Ustby came off the bench and led UNC (5-2, 0-2 ACC) with a team-high 17 points while adding eight rebounds, four steals and converting on seven of her 10 shots from the floor.

Another freshman–point guard Deja Kelly–had 16 points for the Tar Heels, while senior forward Janelle Bailey notched a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds of her own

Those efforts were not enough to give UNC an advantage against Miami (4-1, 1-1 ACC), which built a 33-23 lead by halftime.

The Tar Heels used a pair of clutch three-pointers by Kelly in the fourth quarter to spark a late run that brought them within two points, but with only 25 seconds remaining Miami was able to make its free throws and hang on for the win.

Destiny Harden led the Hurricanes with a game-high 20 points.

“Our young guys have grown a lot,” UNC head coach Courtney Banghart said afterwards. “I love this team and I think we’ll keep getting better.”
