Despite getting a career-high 26 points from senior guard Shayla Bennett on Sunday afternoon in Blacksburg, the UNC women’s basketball team still came up on the wrong end of the scoreline in a 76-70 loss to the Virginia Tech Hokies.

It was the first ACC loss of the season for the Tar Heels, who saw their record fall to 11-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Virginia Tech, meanwhile, improved to 11-3 and 2-1 in the ACC with its victory.

UNC trailed 36-32 at halftime on Sunday, but the Hokies opened the third quarter on an 18-4 run to pull ahead by 18 points–representing the largest deficit the Tar Heels have faced all season long.

In the fourth quarter, UNC battled back to within three at one point and then later whittled the deficit to five points in the closing seconds but was unable to fully complete the comeback.

A total of four players scored in double figures for head coach Courtney Banghart’s squad, as Taylor Koenen tallied 15 points, Malu Tshitenge had 12 and Medinah Muhammad had 10 to join Bennett among the team’s top scorers.
