As the Carolina Baseball program begins for its stint in the College World Series this weekend, seven of the Diamond Heels will be doing so with new accolades to their names.
The National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America announced their All-American teams on Wednesday, as did the Perfect Game scouting service and website on Tuesday. Star UNC centerfielder Vance Honeycutt earned recognition from both organizations, while six of his teammates picked up a variety of honors.
The NCBWA named Honeycutt — the two-time reigning ACC Defensive Player of the Year and projected first-round pick as a junior— and Carolina first baseman Parks Harber to its All-America second team, while relief pitcher Matthew Matthijs earned a spot on the All-America third team. Meanwhile, Perfect Game named Honeycutt as a first team All-American and Diamond Heels relief pitcher Dalton Pence picked up a spot on its second team.
UNC catcher Luke Stevenson, starting pitcher Jason DeCaro and Gavin Gallaher also earned honors from Perfect Game, landing on the website’s All-Freshman lists for hitters and pitchers. Stevenson and DeCaro each received first team honors, while Gallaher was named to the second team. Stevenson also earned a second team All-American honor from the NCBWA earlier in the week.
The American Baseball Coaches Association also named Honeycutt a first team All-American.
The announcements marked the first career All-America honors for Harber, Matthijs, and Pence. Honeycutt, meanwhile, earned the honor from multiple publications as a freshman in 2022.
The No. 4 Diamond Heels will help open the 2024 College World Series in Omaha on Friday, as they take on No. 12 Virginia. First pitch at Charles Schwab Field is set for 2 p.m. EDT/1 p.m. CDT at Charles Schwab Field.
