A lone goal by junior forward Madison Schultz in the 74th minute proved to be the difference maker for North Carolina, as the Tar Heels defeated Wake Forest 1-0 to finish unbeaten in ACC conference play.
This is the first time that the Tar Heels (15-2-1, 10-0 ACC) have finished unbeaten and untied in conference play since 2006.
The game, which also served as Senior Night for the Tar Heels, proved to be a defensive affair and Wake Forest held UNC to a season-low seven shots in the matchup. Schultz got the start in the game due an injury to freshman midfielder Rachel Jones and capitalized on the opportunity, scoring her second goal of the season and the tenth of her career at Carolina.
UNC finishes the regular season on a 10-game winning streak heading into the ACC Tournament, where the Tar Heels will be the No. 1 overall seed. Wake Forest (8-8-1, 4-6 ACC) snapped a two-game winning streak and will miss the ACC Tournament.
Up next for Carolina is a matchup against Virginia Tech, the No. 8 seed in the ACC Tournament, on Sunday, October at 1:00 p.m. at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary. The two teams played earlier this month, with North Carolina emerging with a 2-0 victory in Blacksburg.
If the Tar Heels emerge victorious, they will go on to face the winner of No. 4 Boston College and No. 5 Clemson for a spot in the ACC title game. The other side of the bracket features No. 2 Duke, No. 7 Florida State, No. 3 Virginia and No. 6 Louisville.
UNC has regular season victories over all of the teams in the ACC Tournament except Duke. UNC was scheduled to play the Blue Devils on August 12 in an exhibition matchup, but that game was canceled.
