In their first game at Carmichael Arena under new head coach Courtney Banghart–although it was an exhibition–the UNC women’s basketball team easily dismantled Wingate on Saturday afternoon by a score of 82-37.

Junior center Janelle Bailey led the way with a team-high 16 points and 11 rebounds, while senior guard Shayla Bennett added 14 points and freshman Kennady Tucker had 12. Senior Taylor Koenen was the fourth Tar Heel in double figures, ending the day with 11 points and a team-high five assists.

Defensively, UNC held Wingate to just five points in the second quarter and only six in the third quarter.

The Tar Heels led 37-19 at halftime before really pulling away in the second half.

“It was good to get a chance to be all on one team today – it’s been a long time of just practicing against each other,” Banghart said afterwards. “It’s good to get your sea legs a little bit. We’ve got a lot of experience and a lot of inexperience on this team, so we need as many of these outings as we can get.”
