The season ended with a crashing thud for the UNC women’s basketball team on Wednesday afternoon in Greensboro as the Tar Heels fell to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons by a score of 83-73 in the first round of this year’s ACC Tournament.

Senior guard Shayla Bennett led the Tar Heels (16-14, 7-12 ACC) by tying her career-high with 26 points in her final game at UNC, but it was not enough to prevent the team from suffering its eighth consecutive loss to end the year.

Fellow seniors Taylor Koenen and Medinah Muhammad added 19 and 13 points respectively for UNC, joining Bennett as the only other players in double figures.

The Tar Heels trailed 61-58 early in the fourth quarter of what had been a back-and-forth game, until Wake Forest (15-15, 8-11 ACC) took off on a 10-0 run which ultimately proved to be the difference as UNC was never able to pull back within single digits.

Both teams shot 44 percent from the floor in the game, however Wake Forest dominated the rebounding battle by a margin of 47-22.

Despite starting the season 16-6 and looking like a surefire bet to make the NCAA Tournament, the eight-game losing streak to end the season ultimately doomed the Tar Heels in their first season under new head coach Courtney Banghart.
