A federal inmate held at the Orange County Detention Center died on Wednesday following an altercation within the compound.

Orange County Sheriff’s Office shared a release Thursday morning saying Maurice Antoine King of Durham had died. Investigators believe King and several other inmates had a verbal altercation which escalated between King and at least one other, according to the release.

Authorities transferred King to Duke University Medical Center after the incident, where he later died. He was 35.

The sheriff’s office said King was in the detention center due to an agreement between Orange County and the US Marshals. The marshals notified the Federal Bureau of Investigation about King’s death, who then requested the sheriff’s office conduct the investigation.
