As part of the 2021 CBS Sports Classic on Saturday Dec. 18, the UNC men’s basketball team will take on one of last year’s national semifinalists in UCLA.
The site for the game will be determined at a later date, but the schedule has the Tar Heels and Bruins playing at 3 p.m. before the day’s other scheduled contest between Ohio State and Kentucky.
This marks the eighth annual CBS Sports Classic, which has included the same four schools — all with storied histories — in each of the eight years.
UNC leads the four schools with an all-time record of 5-2 in the event, including a 75-63 win over Kentucky last season in Cleveland.
The most recent meeting between the Tar Heels and Bruins came during the 2019 CBS Sports Classic in Las Vegas, a game UNC won by a score of 74-64.
This year’s Tar Heels will have a much different look, starting with new head coach Hubert Davis — who took over for the retired Hall-of-Famer Roy Williams back in April.
Day’Ron Sharpe, Garrison Brooks and Walker Kessler all departed the program for either the NBA Draft or transfer opportunities, leaving the Tar Heel frontcourt thinned out.
The return of Armando Bacot — who was testing the NBA Draft process — and the addition of transfers Dawson Garcia, Brady Manek and Justin McKoy will help to make up for those losses up front.
UCLA will bring back star guard Johnny Juzang, after he recently said he was pulling his name out of NBA Draft consideration. Juzang became the darling of the NCAA Tournament this past spring after guiding the No. 11 seed Bruins on an improbable run from the First Four to the Final Four.

UNC Snaps Four-Game Losing Streak With 74-64 Victory Over UCLA in Las VegasLooking to avoid its longest losing streak of the decade on Saturday afternoon at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the UNC men’s basketball team finally showed some signs of life in a 74-64 victory over the UCLA Bruins. Costly Turnovers Doom No. 9 UNC in Loss to No. 19 KentuckyComing off a signature victory last weekend at home against Gonzaga, the ninth-ranked UNC men’s basketball team had a chance for another on Saturday in Chicago—but too many costly turnovers ultimately cost the Tar Heels in an 80-72 loss to the No. 19 Kentucky Wildcats. Sharp-Shooting Tar Heels Knock Off Ohio State in New OrleansLooking to bounce back from a devastating home loss to Wofford this past Wednesday, the fifth-ranked Tar Heels put on a shooting clinic in New Orleans on Saturday—draining 13 three-pointers in an 86-72 victory over Ohio State. While perimeter shooting has been more of a weakness than a strength for UNC in recent seasons, this […]

Art’s Angle: Stars Stepped UpThe Carolina trio of Seth Trimble, Henri Veesar and Caleb Wilson all made critical plays in UNC's dramatic win over Ohio State on Saturday.

Art's Angle: Trench FightingThe ironies were unmistakable. UNC men’s basketball coach Hubert Davis said before the game that rebounding would be a key to victory, and while Kentucky’s size and athleticism were superior to Carolina’s, a botched rebound by two colliding Tar Heels (Cormac Ryan and Jae’Lyn Withers) cost them a key possession with 1:08 left in the […]

Art’s Angle: False PositivesSince we’re in the era of COVID, let’s say that Carolina’s performance in Las Vegas against Kentucky was a series of false positives. The five-game winning streak that included impressive second halves was apparently no indication that the Tar Heels were ready to play a full game against a quality opponent like the nationally-ranked Wildcats. […]
