Just days after UNC head coach Mack Brown announced true freshman Sam Howell would be the first team quarterback after a three-way dual for that position in the early portion of training camp, it appears the Tar Heels will be losing one of their top three options at the position.

Inside Carolina reported Thursday that redshirt freshman Cade Fortin will enter the NCAA transfer portal and seek to continue his career elsewhere.

Fortin saw action in four games last season, throwing for 388 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 76 yards and another score.

Coming out of North Gwinnett high School in Suwanee, Georgia, Fortin was a three-star recruit according to 24/7 Sports–checking in as the No. 29 pro-style quarterback in the country.

At a press conference this past Sunday, Brown told reporters that the 6-foot-3 signal caller had been battling a sore arm during camp.

While Howell–a highly-touted four-star recruit who flipped his commitment from Florida State to UNC–is widely expected to win the starting job ahead of next Saturday’s season opener against South Carolina, this news means that redshirt freshman Jace Ruder will be his only competition for it.
