Fresh off a scintillating performance in a 56-45 win over then-No. 19 Virginia Tech on Saturday, the UNC football team moved up three spots to No. 5 on Sunday in the newest edition of the Associated Press Top 25 rankings.

This marks the highest the Tar Heels have been ranked since they were No. 4 back on Oct. 20, 1997–the final year of head coach Mack Brown’s first tenure.

UNC has begun the season 3-0 with a trio of ACC wins over Syracuse, Boston College and Virginia Tech. This is also the first time the Tar Heels have been 3-0 since 2011.

Clemson remains No. 1 in the rankings followed by No. 2 Alabama, No. 3 Georgia, No. 4 Notre Dame and UNC.

The rest of the top 10 consists of: No. 6 Ohio State, No. 7 Oklahoma State, No. 8 Cincinnati, No. 9 Penn State and No. 10 Florida.

In addition to three of the top five teams in America–Clemson, Notre Dame and the Tar Heels–the ACC is also represented this week by No. 13 Miami and No. 23 Virginia Tech.

UNC returns to action this Saturday in Tallahassee against unranked Florida State.
