Carolina (3-1) returns to Chapel Hill after suffering its first loss of the season last week against Florida State.

The Tar Heels were a two-touchdown favorite against FSU, but dug themselves into a 31-7 hole at halftime. Critical drops on the last possession of the game allowed Florida State to escape with a 31-28 win — a much-needed win for new head coach Mike Norvell.

UNC must rebound against NC State (4-1), who comes into this matchup ranked 23rd in the country. It’s the first ranked game between the two rivals since 1993 (Carolina won that game 35-14).

Last week, NC State quarterback Devin Leary went down with a serious ankle injury that will sideline him for the foreseeable future. Leary was playing well, with 879 yards and eight touchdowns through the first five games of the season. Now, the Wolfpack turn to Bailey Hockman in order to keep their momentum alive.

Despite the injuries at quarterback, UNC isn’t looking past NC State.

“We had a lot of success against those guys,” Sam Howell told reporters earlier this week. “But I think they’re a lot better football team this year than they were last year, so we definitely have to be prepared for that. And we’re not the same team as last year. So it’s a new year, both two new teams, so we can’t really look at last year.”

Carolina is an 18-point favorite over NC State at the time of publishing.
