Just six days after landed its highest-ranked high school commitment in the Class of 2022, the UNC Football program added a new high-water mark recruit to its incoming class.

Four-star linebacker Sebastian Cheeks of Evanston Township, Illinois, announced his verbal commitment to head coach Mack Brown’s program on Wednesday. The No. 131 ranked high school recruit in the 2022 senior class edges out four-star running back Omarion Hampton, who committed to Carolina last week. Hampton, who plays for Cleveland High School in North Carolina, is ranked as the No. 144 prospect by 247Sports.

Cheeks is listed as the 15th-ranked linebacker in the 2022 class and the No. 4 player out of the state of Illinois. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound senior chose UNC over attending Michigan, Oregon, Texas, Notre Dame or Wisconsin.

Cheeks becomes the second linebacker in UNC football’s recruiting class for the 2022 season. Three-star linebacker Deuce Caldwell committed to the program in June. The pair are expected to join a young core of linebackers for Carolina, as current junior Eugene Asante and current freshmen RaRa Dillworth, Power Echols and Cedric Gray are projected to be on the 2022 roster.

Five other defensive players have voiced their plans to play for the Tar Heels in the 2022 recruiting cycle so far.
